ABOUT US:
OUR
PRODUCTION PROCESS follows only the highest standards set by
the owners of the company, and it starts from before we receive
our lumber.
We begin by ordering the best quality Western Red Cedar from sawmills
in British Columbia. Since we have a fully equipped factory to process
any form of lumber, we always have the option of ordering the best
of what is available, instead of being restricted like some manufacturers.
The care we put into our furniture starts while the trees
are still standing! We only use cedar that is harvested by environmentally
friendly companies who are engaged in programs of reforestation.
When the lumber arrives, every piece is inspected and sorted by
our production manager by grade, color, aesthetic appearance and
feel. This is a very important step in the production process because
it is at this point that we decide whether or not each piece meets
our exacting standards, and if it does not we reject it. He also
decides which piece of cedar will look best in what position (as
a slat, leg, back, top, bottom, etc), and arranges them in corresponding
piles.
If not already done, the lumber will then be "kiln dried"
and/or air-dried (depending on what is necessary) to reach the optimal
humidity content to allow it to be properly worked as well as optimally
accept the stain in our treatment process. We understand that wood
that is left "green" or wet will not absorb the stain
as well as a properly dried piece, which will make the final finish
inferior. Furthermore, if lumber is not properly dried it can end
up cracking or "checking" if left in the sun since the
outer layers of the wood will dry too quickly compared to the inner
layers.
One of the other secrets to making beautiful furniture is in the
sanding. Before and after cutting the lumber into the components
that will be used, we pass every piece of wood through several extensive
sanding processes to ensure that each piece has a silky smooth finish
on it. From the first sanding stage using the wide dual drum sander,
to the oscillating belt sander, to the pneumatic drum sanders to
the smaller hand-held sanders, to the hand sanding using individual
sheets, we make sure that each piece receives the same undivided
attention. Aside from making the wood look and feel luxurious, these
steps also prepare the wood to receive a stain and help it to soak
in properly. Wood that has not been properly sanded after it has
been planed cannot and will not accept stain properly.
At every stage from beginning to final assembly each piece is continually
inspected again and again to ensure that it has been properly selected
for the proper use and to ensure that no defective pieces are incorporated
into the furniture and sent out. Three words come to mind when describing
how we make our furniture
quality, quality, quality.
